In November, we hosted a viewing of the 3 part series “Race: the Power of an Illusion”, followed by discussions. Based on the idea that “you can’t change what you don’t know”, we hoped to learn more about the origins of Racism along with others in our community.
As a result of the viewings, the Chief Rick Mathwig of the Roseville Police Department had this to say:
“I highly encourage everyone to watch the three, one-hour episodes with your family, neighborhood or school group, church, etc. and talk about how you feel based on what you remember learning in school about our country and how race intersects with many subjects. You can check out the DVDs from the Roseville library, rent them on Vimeo or view them on YouTube. The Roseville Human Rights Commission expects to show them at the Roseville library in late-winter. I learned several things that I did not in high school and college, or I forgot them. One comment in my head after the third video was, “I thought we were a better society than that.”
After the second movie I had a brief conversation with Sherry and we discussed making positive changes in our society to reduce the inequities in our culture based on race. Community viewings and conversations- no matter the size of the group- are, in my mind, forming ripples in the water of a large ocean of necessary change. Now is the time to capitalize on the ripples of conversations and small changes taking part across the country. Small ripples of change can produce larger waves and potentially a tsunami if we capitalize on the efforts and attach funding to make effective and long-lasting change.”
Do Good Roseville is committed to providing more opportunities for ongoing conversations. Stay tuned!
