We had no idea what we were beginning in 2016!
For many people, rather than being a source of joy surrounded by loved ones, the holidays can be a difficult time. This was an opportunity for people to have an informal conversation about the holidays, and an opportunity to find out how others navigate this time of year.
At an event at the Ramsey County Library, Sherry and Kathy heard someone mention this series. We wanted to bring it to our community as quickly as possible, but needed a space. We reached out to three different churches in our community (of different denominations and locations) and asked them if they would be willing to host one showing, and they all agreed! Thank you very much to Galilee Lutheran Church, Calvary Baptist Church, and Church of Corpus Christi.
On October 20, 2016, we hosted the first in what we plan to make an ongoing series of Community Conversations on Racism. This first conversation was based on black perspectives on racism.
It was at this event that Kathy and Sherry first met Nyia Harris. When we started DGR we hoped people would bring us ideas we could help make happen. Shortly after this conversation, Nyia told us she wanted to have a group of black men answer questions about their experiences. Little did we know that chance meeting would bring us our amazing third partner and become our most popular bi-monthly Ask Series!!!
Our first big event in 2016 was our first ever Roseville Area Community Volunteer Fair. We had 24 non-profits participate, and it has become an annual event the first Saturday in October.
